2012 CRAFT SHOWS at USM
April 21st
November 10th and 11th
Happy New Year! We know that you have already begun your show planning for 2012. Sorry for our tardiness in getting you our dates, but we hope you will be able to join us for our 5th ANNUAL SHOWS. Five years ago we had a great indoor space and an idea. We are grateful to the vendors that took the risk to try a new show and for the continued support over the years. This past fall we had the our highest number of vendor booths, reaching capacity, and we saw the highest number of patrons come through the doors. We continue to implement your suggestions and ideas and feel we have created a successful and vendor friendly environment. We hope you can join us during 2012 to celebrate the 5th year. Attached are the applications. Also the updated information will soon be posted on the web page http://www.southernmainehuskies.com/fundraising/craftshow We also have created a facebook page and will work to update information there as well http://www.facebook.com/USMCraftShows. We hope to see you in April and/or November.

Empty Bowl Project
The Southern Maine Woodturners will again be turning utility bowls to raise money for the Good Shepherd Food Bank. Our Turn-a-thon will be held the Sat. & Sun. of Thanksgiving Weekend.
As in the past, we are asking for bowls that are unfinished (or mineral-oiled), sanded to 240 or 320 grit, and approximately 5-7" in diameter... that can be used for a small salad, cereal, nuts, popcorn, etc..
When you come, please bring whatever you'll need...bowl blank, grinding jig, faceshield, respirator, chuck (1"x8tpi), etc. We'll have SHEET sandpaper & mineral oil for you, if you need it.
If you can come please sign up for 1 specific time OR turn your bowl at home and bring it in to Rockler before or during Thanksgiving Weekend.
Molly will have 4 lathes for us, so when four people sign up for a time slot, that slot will be closed.

Last spring when we did this we were able to donate around $1500 to the Good Shepard Food Bank
News for September 2011.
Minutes for the September meeting:
September 7, 2011 Minutes of Business Meeting
Molly Petit announced Rockler was donating three $20 gift cards plus store merchandise to this evening’s raffle.
Anita Taylor is taking orders for club hats, T shirts and sweatshirts – she has 8 hats available for sale, but needs orders for more shirts and sweatshirts before she can send another order.
Joan Keeler has been doing snacks, but has some medical issues, so volunteers are requested to sign up to bring snacks for meetings.
Stan Reed, who has been selling raffle tickets, requested more volunteers to work along with him selling the tickets. Several volunteered for the next few meetings.
We have new speakers, so hopefully everyone can hear what is being said clearly now.
Jim Belfore makes copies of the videos taken of each demonstration, for every meeting. The cost for each is only $2, to be paid in cash only. If he runs out of videos for a particular meeting, he can make another. Ask Jim for further details.
Mark Irving reported that we have $6128 in the treasury after paying all the bills. Suggestions for how to spend this money were to have two celebrity turners a year (they charge about $600 per presentation), and to limit this to two so that we can learn from our local talent, which is considerable. Other suggestions were for the club’s own tools for demonstrating, a vacuum chuck, and a small portable lathe to be carried to shows for demonstration. Problems raised included where to store these items. A committee consisting of Peter Asselyn, Chris Dudley, and Bill Housley was formed to explore all these issues.
Nick Agar will be here to demonstrate all day Saturday, October 22. A link to Nick’s website will be on the SOME website so that members can see what type of work Nick will be demonstrating. A request was made for food donations for that day.
Chris Dudley announced that the Fryeburg Fair agreed to a club table at the fair, next to Chris’s booth where he is showing his furniture. The cost is $200 for all 8 days of the fair, plus $60 for insurance (if needed). The setup day is Saturday 10/1. Chris has done this fair for the past 9 years, and volunteered to keep track of money if club members wanted to sell turnings. He also has a small lathe for demonstration purposes. The question raised was, should the club sponsor a booth this year? Chris said if we decided to not sponsor a booth, the booth may not be available another year.
A lively and spirited discussion followed. Some felt that we don’t have enough time to prepare for a week long event. AAW insurance will cover the booth if the person present is an AAW member. A quick survey was made for people willing to “man” the booth, and Pilgrim Bouffard, Bob Brady, and Winston Langston volunteered for a whole day, and Karl Jacobsen can help half a day. More volunteers are needed for this 8 day event. Sales tax questions were raised, with the end result being everyone who sells anything at the fair should be responsible for collecting their own sales tax if applicable to that person’s situation. Should people who sell their own items at the fair donate a percentage back to the club? Or should those people pay a nominal fee- perhaps $1- to rent the booth? The general consensus was, not necessary (and Chris felt we could not “sublet” the booth).
Discussion then centered around: should the purpose of the booth be to display information about the club only, or should members be allowed to sell their turnings there also? We do have a TV Monitor, and Molly is willing to loan the store DVD for the week, to show the DVD’s we have. We will take literature about our club and our banner to display. A vote taken yielded 32 in favor of members being permitted to sell their wares at the event, and 19 opposed.
Kevin Hart agreed to research non profit status for the club.
Jeff Enck, who was a nominating committee of one to find a new president, announced the following slate of officers:
- Dick Shryock – President
- EJ Lilley – Vice-President
- Bob Dawson – Secretary
- Mark Irving – Treasurer.
Dick Shryock then took the microphone in his first duty as the new club President. He thanked Damon for starting this club and serving as President, and presented him with a lovely wood plaque, granting Damon lifetime membership and permanent President Emeritus status. He also presented, on behalf of the club, a Rockler metal lunchbox with a gift certificate inside. We all are very grateful to Damon for his hard work and leadership as this club has grown so quickly with such a good foundation under his guidance.
The Business Meeting was concluded, and Damon presented an excellent and all too short demonstration of work holding ideas for the lathe.
Submitted for Bob Dawson, JH ( Joyce Hanna )
